Our Directors Make a Difference
Our Directors Make a Difference

Like other electric co-ops, South Plains Electric Cooperative is guided by a locally-elected board of directors that represents its members when making important decisions. Being a member of the board is an important and highly responsible position in the community, and directors devote considerable time to the cause of powering our communities and empowering co-op members to improve the quality of their lives.
A director’s decisions affect issues such as service rates, rights-of-way and capital credits, as well as strategic, financial and work plans. The post requires savvy, selfless men and women who understand their community’s needs and work to represent the members’ best interests.
All electric co-op boards benefit from the experience and accumulated knowledge of incumbent directors, many of whom undergo substantial education on topics such as the electric industry, technology, governance, risk management, rate-setting and policy development. The National Rural Electric Cooperative Association offers training for directors to achieve national benchmarks such as Credentialed Cooperative Director or Board Leadership certifications. Established directors provide continuity and a depth of knowledge for the Cooperative.
Our board is a democratically-elected body, with each director nominated by members of the Cooperative’s service territory and voted into position by all members who choose to participate in the Cooperative’s open election. Any Co-op member in good standing can run for an open board position for the district in which they receive service.
Equally important to electing directors whom you think will act in the best interest of our communities is attending South Plains Electric Cooperative’s annual meeting.

Nominating committees
The board appointed nominating committee members at its March meeting for each of the four districts with expiring director terms. Each nominating committee will make nominations for its specific district. If you are interested in becoming a director, please contact the committee members for your district. Additional nominations can be made by petition by following the process outlined below.
Petition process
A qualified member can be put on the ballot through the petition process. The qualified member must submit a petition containing the signatures of any 30 members holding active meters within the district for election. The petition nominee’s name will be included on the ballot along with the committee nominee(s).
Petition nominations can be submitted by hand delivery or by U.S. mail to any Cooperative office prior to the specific deadline date and time for receipt.
Voting process
A secret ballot vote will be conducted at the membership meeting corresponding with the districts for election.
Nominating committee candidate(s) for District 4 and District 6, along with any petition nominations submitted by the June 22, 5 p.m. deadline, will be on the ballot presented at the Annual Membership Meeting on September 12.
Nominating committee candidate(s) for District 9, along with any petition nominations submitted by the May 23, 5 p.m. deadline, will be on the ballot presented to the members at the Spur High School Auditorium on July 20.
Nominating committee candidate(s) for District 11, along with any petition nominations submitted by the May 23,
5 p.m. deadline, will be on the ballot presented to the members at the Childress Expo Center on July 18.
Members will cast their ballots, and the candidate receiving the most votes will be declared the winner. All four winners will be presented to the membership for ratification before the conclusion of the Annual Meeting, September 12, in Lubbock. The ratified members will take office when the meeting adjourns.
